Lisa Kan is one of those women you wish was your neighbor and good friend. She beads, she enamels, she does lampwork, she does metal work, she makes art baskets-you know she has an AMAZING work room you could spend days in…..
Well, even if she isn’t your BFF or neighbor, you can still take a peek into her creative mind with her new book Bead Romantique (released April 1, 2008).  It is full of gorgeous, antique inspired beadwork utilizing seedbeads, vintage buttons, pearls, crystals and gorgeous findings. Lisa wrote: “The patterns really pay tribute to historical jewelry jewelry designs, but I also wanted to create beadwork that would be beautiful, elegant and wearable. ” Â
There are 17 projects in this book that build upon basic off loom beadworking stitches. Intermediate and advanced beaders will be drawn to way Ms. Kan expands upon basic stitches such as netting or ndebele. Beginners should not feel intimated by the the patterns. Each project builds on simple elements that are broken down into easy, workable steps. This makes the seemingly complex pattern relatively easy. Also, there are lots of illustrations showing you which way the threads should be going, so you never feel ‘lost’.Â
The book starts with a short introduction to materials & tools you would use to use to create jewelry with a vintage feel. It also has a designer technique tips and tricks section including how to finish your work professionally. In the back of the book, there is a basic section that goes over the essential beadwork techniques. There is a nice resource section. Another thing I really like about this book is there is a project resources page as well as a project resourse page that breaks down where she bought the items for that particular project. If you want to make the Netted Rivoli Chain Earrings, you can quickly look to see where to buy what from whom. This saves ALOT of time!!!Â
I am in love with the Ndebele Pearl Medallions,  Bohemian Drop Earrings, Triple Spiral Garden and the Victorian Diamond Cuff. So much so, that I am going to get my beading needles out of retirement and give these projects a try. Â
