CRAFT announced this morning that they will no longer be printing the hard copy of their popular magazine and are moving to online version only. CRAFT magazine is far from dead, and they feel going digital is a huge plus. The reasons they state for discontinuing the print version are “there were more and more challenges in publishing CRAFT as a print magazine, especially with the costs of print and distribution rising, and diminishing interest among advertisers in print.”
This is a disappointint for everyone involved, although I know they will be able to grow and do things they couldn’t do with a paper version. I like having everything online but still like to peruse a paper magazine as well. It’s difficult to hold a laptop while standing on a packed bus or train or in line at a store.
Sister Diane of Craftypod had a very insightful blogpost today about the demise of craft magazines. Here is an excerpt: “CRAFT’s print version is just the latest in a long string of print magazines folding. This article paints a grim picture of what happened in 2008. And if you want a real-time picture of publishing in crisis, try following @themediaisdying on Twitter.” I agree with her viewpoints about advertising and consumers needing to support their magazines and advertisers. Well, there are so many absolutely great websites & blogs around about crafting, that they will really need to come up with alternative business models than merely have a website version of its old magazine.
They will really have to do high quality video, networking, etc etc.
