“Chante wasteya nape chiyuzapelo.” I shake your hands with a good heart. – traditional Lakota greeting
St. Francis Mission is a ministry of the Jesuits in South Dakota among the Lakota (Sioux) people on the Rosebud Indian Reservation. The Mission is a non-profit organization founded in 1886. The St. Francis Mission respects the traditions of the Lakota people and collaborates with them to meet the spiritual, educational, social, and physical needs of the community. One way they help the community is through the Buechel Memorial Lakota Museum. The Museum is one of two Lakota museums in the entire world and is a unique resource. They have an extensive photographic collection that exceeds 42,000 items!
As part of the museum, their online store sells handmade Lakota jewelry and other craft articles. The gift shop is a fair trade business that works with Lakota artisans, who have years of experience working in the distinctive Lakota colors, patterns, materials, and images.
