From Beading Daily, contributing editor Jean Campbell recalls learning about natural vs dyed gemstones the hard way. Back in her early days of jewelrymaking, she thought she was buying Sleeping Beauty Turquoise but in reality ended up with Sleeping Beauty Turquoise colored dyed Howlite. This has probably happened to us all at one time, and it makes us alot more careful when buying stones. She tells us how to ask the right questions, read carefully and avoid making a mistake buy. She has the list of American Gem Trade Association’s Enhancement Codes as well which is very helpful when shopping for stones online. Read the full article here.
I have also gotten hoodwinked in my early days buying thru catalogs and recieved reconstituted turquoise rather than natural nuggets. This info is good to have, so you don’t make any costly mistakes.

Great article. I think we all learned the hard way when first starting out, and it’s always good to have a reminder on choosing the right stones.
