Do you sometimes want to oxide a piece of silver but realize you are out of Liver of Sulfer. Or maybe you are chemically sensitive and don’t want chemicals in the house. Well, there is an easy way to do it with something most of us have in the fridge.
An egg-yes thats right-EGG! All you need is an egg, a tightly sealed container and your silver pieces! This method of oxidizing takes longer than using liver of sulfur, but it seems to work just about as well.
Put your silver inside the container, Tupperware or even a good ziplock bag will work, as long as its air tight. Boil an egg and quickly peel it while its hot. Break the hot egg into pieces and put it the container, along with the sterling silver and close quickly.
After 15-20 minutes, shake the container around a little to move the jewelry a bit and expose sides that may have been on the bottom. You want it to oxidize somewhat evenly-or not, its your choice!!!
If the egg gets cold before your silver has oxidized as much as you’d want thats easy to fix no problem. Just remove the egg from the container and pop it into the microwave to heat it back up. Quickly put the hot egg back into the container and seal it up again and repeat.
So get out some eggs and try it out!!!
